What Is the Glycemic Index (GI)?

The glycemic index is a rating system for food that indicates how your blood glucose levels may increase or decrease due to its carb/sugar content.

The amount of sugar in your diet can determine how quickly your blood sugar fluctuates. However, this glycemic index rating scale changes based on the degree to which each food item is processed, how it is cooked, and how ripe it may be when you are eating it. 

Consuming a diet that consists solely of the high end of the glycemic index  (without balancing it with enough fiber and other nutrients) is prevalent in the development of Type 2 Diabetes. The same can be said for cardiovascular disease, gallbladder disease, and certain cancers.

By eating a more balanced diet (and taking other preventative measures), you can lower your risk of developing any of these health conditions. 

How Does It Affect Gastrointestinal Health?

Foods that are lower on the glycemic index are going to take longer to digest meaning that it will allow your blood glucose levels to increase in a safe and controlled manner. This means that you should be eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Foods higher on the glycemic index are full of sugar and digest more rapidly. This means that foods like sugary soda, white bread, and potatoes can cause your blood glucose levels to drop, especially if it isn't a part of a balanced diet. This can be extremely dangerous and may lead to glycemic shock. 

What Is Hypoglycemic Shock?

Hypoglycemic shock (or diabetic shock) occurs when blood glucose levels plummet. When you have too much insulin in your bloodstream, the glucose levels drop quickly. You can have too much insulin in your bloodstream when:

• You push yourself during a workout without having enough nutrients
• You change what time or how much you eat (or give yourself an insulin injection)
• You drink too much alcohol without eating a balanced meal

You will definitely know when your body is going to go into shock because of the physical symptoms you will go through. Symptoms of incoming hypoglycemic shock include:

• Dizziness
• Headaches
• Sweating
• Anxiety

Hypoglycemic shock can lead to trouble speaking and double vision. When left untreated, it can lead to unconsciousness resulting in a coma or death.
