Resource Availability

Resource Availability refers to the availability of time, energy, space, and support required to perform behaviors. In everyday life, this includes whether you have the practical resources needed to follow through on what you intend to do.

This page is part of the Whole-Person Health Model, which organizes everyday health into four connected dimensions: Lifestyle Domains, Behavioral Patterns, Environment, and Adaptive Process.

What this looks like in daily life

Resource availability shows up in whether you have enough time, energy, space, and support to carry out daily actions.

This includes things like having time in your schedule, enough physical or mental energy, access to space, or help from others when needed.

Why it matters over time

Behavior depends on what is realistically available.

Over time, limited resources can restrict what is possible, while sufficient resources make certain actions more likely to happen consistently.

How it shows up in routines

Resource availability shapes what fits into daily life.

Some routines are supported by available time and energy, while others are reduced or skipped when resources are limited.

What influences it

Resource availability is influenced by workload, responsibilities, living conditions, and access to support.

Schedule demands, physical capacity, available space, and help from others all affect how much is realistically available at any given time.

Scope boundaries

This node focuses on external resources that enable or limit behavior.

It does not include internal capacity, motivation, or discipline, which belong to the Adaptive Process. It also does not describe behavior patterns themselves.

For example, having limited time or energy falls within Resource Availability. Choosing how to act within those limits is a matter of behavior.

Resource Availability is one part of the broader environment that shapes daily life. It works alongside Food Environment, Movement Environment, Sleep Environment, Digital Environment, Social Environment, and Environmental Friction and Convenience.

In practical terms, Resource Availability reflects what you have to work with. It sets the practical limits within which daily actions happen.
