Cognitive Load

Cognitive Load refers to the mental effort required to manage tasks, decisions, and responsibilities. In everyday life, this means how much your mind is handling at any given time.

This page is part of the Whole-Person Health Model, which organizes everyday health into four connected dimensions: Lifestyle Domains, Behavioral Patterns, Environment, and Adaptive Process.

What this looks like in daily life

Cognitive load shows up as how mentally demanding your day feels.

This includes managing decisions, juggling responsibilities, processing information, and keeping track of multiple tasks.

Why it matters over time

Mental capacity is limited.

Over time, high cognitive load can make it harder to follow through on behaviors, while lower cognitive load makes routines easier to maintain.

How it shows up in routines

Cognitive load affects how smoothly routines are carried out.

When mental demand is high, routines are more likely to break down. When demand is lower, actions tend to happen more consistently.

What influences it

Cognitive load is influenced by the number of decisions, tasks, and responsibilities being managed.

Complex routines, constant inputs, and competing demands can all increase mental effort.

Scope boundaries

This node focuses on internal mental effort.

It does not include external sources of demand, which belong to nodes like Digital Environment or Environmental Friction and Convenience. It also does not include strategies to reduce load, which belong to Complexity Reduction.

For example, feeling overwhelmed by too many decisions falls within this node. The external factors creating those demands belong elsewhere.

Cognitive Load is the internal experience of managing demand, not the source of that demand.

In practical terms, it reflects how mentally heavy or light daily life feels.
