Taking care of yourself is something that has fallen by the wayside in today's day and age. So much time is spent figuring out how to be more productive and work harder that not only are personal needs neglected, they are compounded by the added stress and anxiety of work and other obligations.

People are under the impression that if they work hard enough or make enough money, they will be happy, and to a certain degree this is true. However, there are many things that are missed with this attitude, such as overall well-being, a sense of fulfillment, among other things. Many of these extra issues can be solved through practicing self-care and taking time out of the day to spend on yourself.

There are a certain set of needs that each person inherently has, and it is important to pay attention to each of these areas. Physical needs are perhaps the most obvious. These needs have to do with items such as diet, exercise, and personal hygiene. Often when life gets busy, it is easy to fall short in these areas, though they seem easy to maintain. People may resort to fast food or skip meals altogether in order to save time in their day. Eating a well-balanced diet and on a somewhat consistent schedule is helpful in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It really doesn't take too much extra time or effort to eat healthy, and it can make a big difference. Exercise is also something that can help a person's overall health. Exercise has been found to increase a person's overall health and well-being in several studies- even something as small as going for a walk can initiate these benefits. Taking time out of the day to dedicate to some form of exercise will help a person's health. Taking care of yourself in the area of personal cleanliness is also important. Skipping simple activities such as showering or brushing your teeth really doesn't save that much time, and the negative effects that arise from consistent skipping of these habits far outweigh the minutes saved by avoiding them. Along with personal hygiene is keeping your living space clean- it is easy to become cluttered and let cleanliness fall to the bottom of the priority list but living a clean life can help promote overall healthier living.

Emotional wellness is also a realm in which people can often fall short. The stress and anxiety that people put on themselves through work and other obligations can really take a toll on a person over time. Mental health has become more of a focus in recent times, which is a benefit to society because of how important it is to a person's health. The solution to mental health is not necessarily always counseling (though this is a viable option), but there are a few things people can do to keep their mental health in check. Having people around who are trustworthy and can be confided in helps relieve the pressure of keeping burdens to oneself. Being open to talking about your struggles, feelings, and other potentially negative aspects of mental health also helps to relieve this pressure. Having an outlet for your emotions, whether it is athletics, art, or some other form of expression, is also a method of coping. Counseling is never a bad option for a person, no matter how much or how little they may feel they need. I think that everyone could benefit from counseling- at the very least, they would obtain a better understanding of themselves.

The last area of significant importance in a person's overall health and wellness is the realm of religion/spirituality. Not all people would say that they are religious or believe in God, but most people say that they value spirituality or that they believe there is a higher power at work. I believe that this is the case because people want to believe their life has meaning and purpose, and a sense of spiritual connection can help fill this need. People can fulfill their need for spiritual connection through a variety of ways, not just going to church or becoming active in a religion. I think that feeling a connection to a higher power or having some kind of spiritual aspect in a person's life can give them not only a greater sense of purpose, but also another outlet for them to unload their burdens and vent about things. I also think that people who have a spiritual outlet in their life tend to be more disciplined, so spirituality can help people in other aspects of their life as well.

Regardless of how much a person contributes to any of these areas, it is important to maintain a balance between them as much as possible. There are certainly areas in which a person is more naturally adept and willing to contribute time and effort, but it is the areas in which we fall short that we ought to dedicate more time. Part of increasing our overall health and wellness is to challenge ourselves regularly to grow. It is when we become stagnant or content with where we are that we lose our edge and fall into unhealthy habits. This is not to say that we can never be satisfied- once we arrive at a point where we do feel healthy, the effort goes into maintaining the habits we have placed in ourselves to stay healthy. Having a support network of friends and family is important not only as people in which we are able to confide, but also as accountability partners with whom we can walk through life. Having the mindset of keeping your own health and wellness a priority also goes a long way- our actions start with our thoughts, so sparking a desire for self-care is essential in growing in this area. Showing people how important self-care is in the maintaining of our own health and wellness is one of the best ways to make others begin to make these changes, so live out the life after which you feel others should model theirs.
