 Tips for Coping with Stress

      2019-07-3107/31/19
Encouragement  Stress

In today's generation, there is an enormous level of stress on individuals to feel content and happy in life. In addition, the concept of social media has created a false perception that everyone is "living their best life". In reality, the number of individuals taking prescription medications for depression and anxiety has tremendously escalated over the years.

Individuals are constantly comparing their lifestyle or choices to others and would rather blend in than stand out. In the world we live in, life is on high speed and many forget to stop and soak it all in. Our brain almost forgets to enjoy and appreciate the good because, it is already focused on the tasks we have to accomplish ahead of us. So many believe that once they accomplish a specific goal they will then feel satisfied. However, the truth is, stress will follow us everywhere. For example, an individual may truly believe that once they land their dream job all their problems will go away and they will float through the rest of life. But in reality, their dream job may come with stress factors as well, such as long hours or time away from doing things they enjoy. If the job does not create stress, pop up problems like flat tires and unexpected medical bills may. As an individual who was just recently hit with depression and anxiety, I can with confidence say that it is very important to take care of yourself and listen to your bodies warning signs. The world we live in is full of stress factors everywhere we go. There will never be an end to stress in one's life. However, the most important factor is learning how to cope with stress in a healthy way. For starters, accepting that one may be stressed is a great sign. Several individuals try to ignore their worries or problems in fear of admitting they have one. I found that when I finally admitted to myself that the way I was living was not going to work, I could finally learn proper coping mechanisms that would lead me to a happier and healthier life.

One of the first important things I learned when I began showing myself more care was the ability to step away from social media and to stop comparing where I was in life to others. Every individual completes life at their own pace, and no two people have the same timeline. When I began to accept that my path for life was not meant to match the pace of friends and others, I truly was more appreciative of how far I have come. In addition, I have learned to enjoy my journey rather than waiting to land at my destination. Our world is living in such a fast pace that we often forget to embrace the little things. It is important to take time out of your day, whether it be an hour or just a few minutes to do something you enjoy and that makes you happy. I find that writing down five things I am thankful for each day makes me a lot more appreciative of life.

Another important factor of taking care of yourself in today's world, is accepting who you are and loving yourself for it. Each individual is unique and special. Everyone has their own purpose to discover in life. It is important to take time out of one's day to evaluate where one stands, and what they must accomplish to get to where they want to be. It is easy to feel stuck in life and experience a period of uncomfortableness. However, embracing the unknown and breaking out of one's comfort zone is when the best growth is produced. Individuals grow when they experience challenges and face them head on. Although it may seem scary at first, the outcome is almost always worth the pain.

Above all, there is absolutely no shame in seeking out professional help when one does not feel mentally stable. Talking to a trained professional who is experienced in the field can be a huge help to certain individuals. Sometimes, individuals may not be sure where their stress is stemming from. With the help of another, new perspectives may enter the picture. From personal experience, learning why I was feeling such discomfort in my own life was a huge step in being able to overcome it. Several individuals get prescribed medication to cope with their feelings of depression or anxiety without trying to dig deeper. Many look for a quick fix that will mask their negative feelings rather than looking within. Although there is no shame in taking medication, it is important to still find the root of the problem and implement changes in one's lifestyle to cope with it. In a world that is full of chaos, individuals must find it within themselves to take a step back and reflect. One of the most important factors while taking care of one's self is discovering what truly brings joy and cutting time out to experience it. Individuals are often caught up in the hectic stresses of life that they forget to appreciate that they are alive. Life is unpredictable and no day is guaranteed. Life should never be taken for granted. Although it is certain we will all experience high intensity levels of stress in our life, our reaction and how we choose to respond to it will have a strong and meaningful impact on our lives.

Each individual has their own set of unique factors that produce stress in their life. How one chooses to react and respond to stress will be different based on their choice of lifestyle, among many other factors. In addition to taking care of one's self, it is also necessary to be kind to others. How one treats those around them is partially a reflection of how they feel about one's self. When individuals respect themselves and show respect to others, they will live a much happier and fulfilled life.
